Oedipus
Oedipus
The Old Vic is set to make history with the highly anticipated world premiere of Ella Hickson’s adaptation of Sophocles’ timeless classic, Oedipus. This extraordinary production boasts an all-star cast, headlined by Academy Award winner Rami Malek, renowned for his roles in Bohemian Rhapsody and the James Bond instalment No Time to Die, alongside Olivier Award winner Indira Varma, celebrated for her performances in Present Laughter and Game of Thrones.
Under the co-direction of Matthew Warchus and Hofesh Shechter, both esteemed figures in the theatre world, this rendition promises to captivate audiences in London's prestigious West End.
The Old Vic Artistic Director, Matthew Warchus, said: "Sophocles' play, arguably the best-plotted tale ever told, is the original detective story. 2,450 years since it was written, we still find ourselves captivated by the intractable questions at the core of its drama: of the sometimes destructive outcomes in our quest for knowledge, how much we’re in control of our fate, or if we’re mostly living out a pre-written script that we’re completely powerless to change. I’m so excited to be co-directing this extraordinary play, in a dazzling new version by Ella Hickson, alongside the phenomenal choreographer Hofesh Shechter. And I am thrilled to announce the brilliant Rami Malek and Indira Varma in the lead roles."
Scheduled for a strictly limited run starting January 2025, it's a theatrical event not to be missed, offering a fresh take on a timeless tale with two of the industry's most illustrious talents at the helm.
